William Trainee (1826 - 1852 disappeared) will mainly be remember as the Trainee of Dr Cuthbert D Holloway and Prof. Bartholomew Strangeways. However he was also the person who inspired Holloway to invent the 'Time Tank'.
William Trainee, born William Trainee Junior was the son of early transsexual mathematician William Trainee Senior the Third. Trainee Snr was one of the first people in history (often overlooked) to perform his own transgenderment. It took Trainee Snr almost 30 years to perform this transformation and in doing so fertilized his own womb with semen taken from himself when he was a man. Trainee Jnr never found out that his father later re-christened Vivian Trainee was actually his mother.
Little is known about Trainee Jnr's formative years though his mother has said that he was sent to a comprehensive London school where he was very successful at the knitting and darning of clothes and shoes. He often thought that his son would open up a Taylor's in central London, but her dreams for her son never materialized. Instead Trainee Jnr left school and went to work at the local meat mincing factory near the now situated Spitatfields Market. It was whilst working at this mind numbing place that Trainee Jnr met and befriended Dr David Pockulates. Pockulates was a frequent visitor to the 'Spitalmince Meat Factory' as he was very good friends with its owner, Bertram Hasenheide. Pockulates saw in Trainee a willingness to learn and youthful young enthusiasm that made Pockulates feel more confident about his own practice.
Whilst in the congress of Dr David Pockulates, Pockulates suggested to Trainee that he meet with some of his powerful chemist friends, Dr Cuthbert D Holloway and Professor Bartholomew Strangeways. Pockulates persuaded the two to help Trainee realise his own potential and take him on as their first and only Trainee.
It was whilst working with the pair in 1850 as their dogsbody and general apprentice that Trainee came up with the idea of the 'Time Tank'. I simple sweater/jumper device that had tiny time wave modulators sewn into the fabric. Trainee went about designing the cut patterns and seam styles as well as the types of pattern repeat that he wanted to use, while Strangeways devised a way to make enough time wave modulators fit into such a tight space. The result was the 'Time Tank', later made fashionable in the 1970's as the 'Tank Top' or 'Langdon' as it was known in North America.
Trainee's dissappearance on June the 19th 1852 was cataclysmic to both Strangeways and Holloway. It was whilst Trainee was asked to conduct some simple tests that something terrible happened. The actual events leading to his disappearance are unclear, but it is speculated that he was tinkering with Strangeways new toy, the 'Time Hammer' when something very wrong happened. One of the only things that was found later in the search of the lab space was a small picture of a cottage that Trainee must have drawn before he disappeared. These words where penned to the bottom of the paper, the last few words where missing. 'Find me amidst the heap of Love, amongst the terrible faces, that I have only just seen... I wait for you there my sweet Lord, hel.....'
